The Sea Ranch Chapel

While on my bike I came across some places so remarkable that stopping became obligatory. The Sea Ranch Chapel was one such place, if not THE place that I remember best. The rest of the text is from the handout found in the chapel.

The Sea Ranch Chapel is the gift of two Sea Ranch residents who wished to offer a nondenominational sanctuary for prayer, meditation, and spiritual renewal.

It was their hope that all who enter will find a measure of peace in the blending of art and purpose amid surroundings of beauty and inspiration.

The chapel is dedicated to a young man, navy aviator, artist, and zoologist, who believed that art is the intermediary between the physical and the spiritual

San Diego artist and architectural designer James Hubbell, designed the chapel, which features a cedar roof accentuated with copper and a bronze spire.

Teak doors complement the native redwood used throughout.

Local stone was used in the walls and surrounding areas; flagstone paving is from Arizona.

Hubbell also designed and crafted the windows, doors, chandeliers, the screen above the priedieu (prayer desk), and the kneeling cushion as well as the ceramic fountain with Italian mosaic accents and the mosaic floor designs.

In 1985 Mr. Hubbell received a "Special Award for Excellence in Craftsmanship" from the California Council of the American Institute of Architects for his 30 years' work in design, sculpture, wood, glass, stone and metal, with particular emphasis on his major project of 1985, The Sea Ranch Chapel.

The Sea Ranch Chapel Foundation, a non-profit organization, welcomes your donations for the continued care of the Chapel.

Our tax exempt number is 33-0225425 (501) (c) (3). such funds are used solely for the maintenance of this unique pace.

An envelope is provided for your donation.
