<lj:music>the hum of i-need-some-shweet-ear-phones.</lj:music>

So if you have a few grand to burn and love designer bamboo furniture then go check out Tomita design.build. Ken is an old friend from college who has been a road trip buddy and art fiend (friend?) for several years. When he asked me to webmaster for his site promoting his work, how could I refuse? And just in case I came up with some reason he bribed me with his mom's gourmet Japanese cooking. Behind the cut is a detailed list as to the products he currently has available as well as a link to some of his art as well.

Ginkgo - Bamboo Ply Coffee Table

This table was inspired by the form of a gingko leaf and the product of a commissioned design, after which it was an accepted entrant into Show PDX 2006, an art opening put on every year by Design Within Reach to display local designers' work. It was one of two pieces accepted.

Kibako - Bamboo Ply Book Display

Another accepted entry into Show PDX 2006, this piece is really amazing to see in person. Personally I think it should have won best in show that year for its combination of organic, historic, and yet modern design. It really comes to life with a few favorite books strewn about it like oversized leaves. If I ever live in a place bigger than a van I'll likely purchase one of these.

Yama - Bamboo Ply Coffee Table

The Yama table is a good example of the traditional influence in Ken's work (he's also done commissioned pieces for Buddhist monasteries and such.) The over all shape is derived from the Japanese gate--torii--often seen in Japan.

Sumi - Bamboo Ply Coffee Table

The Sumi Table, like the Gingko, uses sumi ink to achieve the deep black stain on its legs. For the artists out there, try mixing sumi with acrylic black paint to create an amazing black paint that applies fluidly and often in one coat. Back to the table, this piece uses the cut offs from shaping the legs as the tabletops. Crafty.

Chabu - Bamboo Ply Bench / Table

This is another favorite of mine and priced pretty reasonably for designer furniture. If you're into sitting on the floor it makes a hand drawing table or workbench, and if you're not into floor sitting... viola it's a bench itself. If you have a kotatsu heating element, think blanket, and two of these, you can whip together a make-shift kotatsu.

Megu - Bamboo Ply End Table / Stool / Shelves

These versatile little guys were made as a wedding gift for some friends and are another great piece for getting into designer furniture. If you have multiple units you can arrange them into shelves, tables, stacked, paired, whatever.

Oyome - Bamboo Ply End Table / Stool

Another end table / stool, the shelf below the table top is handy for books, remotes, and other couch or bedside related accouterments.

Ama - Bamboo Ply Bar Stool

A nice feature of this bar stool is that it can be made to any height. This is a piece that I expect to change a bit in the coming months as it often gets that "hmm" look from Ken. I expect the joinery will be moved around to accommodate more diverse arrangements like the Megu and Chabu.

Oh yeah, and here's the gallery. Some of these things might be for sale, but you know how it is with the one-off art pieces... cha-ching!! Yeah, yeah. I know I haven't posted in ages, but hopefully you guys enjoy taking a look at this stuff. I've done quite a bit of work on his site, like photo arrangements, shopping cart, and general page formatting. Hopefully it will all pay off though as Ken's stuff is pretty sweet.

I came across Relevant Revolution today. What is Relevant Revelations? They mix sermons to house music. Uhhh... they do. Seriously. For example, Alistair Begg's Christ and Kingdom. I haven't listened to many others yet, but those were su-weet. Both for his message and how the words become lyrical when mixed the way they were.

You can also download all the Gospels as well as Hebrews and Revelation.

P.S. And the bus ride up there is only a buck. That would be another score.

(And those kids replaced the Austrians. And the little girl kept looking at me when she was drawing. <lj:music>Watcha want, lady? - The Beastles</lj:music>

His name is Kiedis. As in Anthony Kiedis, but not that Kiedis. This Kiedis is a dog. As far as dogs go Kiedis is a bundle of love. Although a mix of some of those more notorious hounds, Kiedis is long on love and short on vitriol. So short in fact I never saw him angry even when people would scrunch up his face or stick their fingers in his nose. Actually, he seemed to like it. The one warning that must be abided by though when dealing with Kiedis is this, "Do not leave anything chewable in Kiedis Land." Kiedis lives outside and for those not privy to his disposition he makes an excellent guard dog. He weighs in at a buck fifty. He barks when someone is coming home. It's a deep bark. Of course as soon as you make it in the fence he'll only try to lick and gum you to death, but such is the way of Kiedis. He won't however like and gum anything made of plastic, fabric, steel, rubber, or Kevlar. From experience I can tell you that in one night he's capable of destroying two water bottles, a soft sided cooler of food, the associated food in the cooler in any sort of container (except glass... apparently Kiedis doesn't like to eat glass), tent bags, bike bags, and bungee cords. Thankfully my bike and my tires were saved from Kiedis of the Night, but I think if given enough time, and some peanut butter, he would have gladly mowed them down.

I came to meet Kiedis while staying with Brianna, a couchsurfing compadre in Santa Cruz. I had never met Brianna before so I was a bit flustered getting acquainted with her, her house, one of her roommate's dogs*, and the Santa Cruz area in general. It was in this blur of time that I failed to take in the full scope of the warning that would echo onward for days to come, "DoOoOoo Not leave AnyThing chewABLE in KiedisLaNd." Understandably, I just wanted to get a shower, change out of spandex, and into regular human clothes. That done I had an extra surprise in store for me, and this was of the, "Holy cow that rocks!" variety. Brianna and her friends were having a dinner party where well made wine and superbly made Italian food would be in attendance.

I have never seen Big Night, but from what I hear there's a scene where a dish called timpano is brought in to the feast and the audience goes slack-jawed at the mere sight of the dish. A concoction of pounds of pasta, sauces, veggies, eggs, meatballs, sausage, spices and cheese baked for hours in a pastry bowl, the dish gets it name from the drum shape it acquires from the bowl. It is then sliced like a cake with slices being placed on a plate and covered in various sauces. At the dinner party, the sauce selection was a marinara (red), an alfredo (white), and a pesto (green). Now that you've got the visuals, combine them in stripes across the plated pasta and, "Viola!"

That's one festive dish. As for the taste, it was magical. In the past, when faced with the hypothetical of having to eat one type of cuisine for the rest of my life, I've said Italian. This just makes it official.

The dinner over and back at Brianna's, I curled up on the hide-a-bed dreaming of the few hundred miles more to Los Angeles and how they'd pass smoothly under my bicycle tires...

Morning broke and I was off to gathering up my things, putting on spandex, and setting up my bike. It took less time than I expected because I now had less stuff. Now one might presume that I'd lay into to Kiedis for the destruction he wrought, but I didn't. In fact, wrath for wrought wasn't even on my mind. I had the warning after all, plus it's not like Kiedis would know what I was mad at him around morning time. He probably thought of me as Santa Claus visiting Santa Cruz on a bike from the doggie North Pole. Water under the bridge. Yet most worrisome were the water bottles. Loosing half my water supply is bad news so as I pushed off with a, "HO HO HO," I made sure that one of my first stops was a convenience store in Santa Cruz where I bought some water bottles and sunscreen. Did I run out of sunscreen? Well not through my own personal use. It seems Kiedis is going to have SPF 45 poo.

For the day I had hoped to make it past Monterey into Big Sur country and a place to camp. Long story short I made it around the bay and that was it. At one point when riding through the farm country of Freedom, California (it's a suburb of Watsonville), I tweaked my bike and some how mangled three spokes on my back wheel. I had to remove the brake caliper and do some creative adjusting to the wheel in order to keep it from rubbing pads or the frame. Still I was making decent time and had made it to the southern side of Monterey by the late afternoon, about to continue south along Highway 1, on down the coast, when I saw it. "It" was sign saying no bikes allowed on the highway. Infrequently along the 1 California redirects bikers off the highway onto side roads to avoid the merging and exiting of cars. Typically this is common in major cities like Monterey or, as I was told by a police officer earlier that morning, in Santa Cruz. So I was feeling a bit skittish in pressing my luck on the forbidden highway. Having no idea where the bikes were supposed to go I did a few circles of a few miles each and time began to wear away to night. Generally, the only bike paths I could find were placing me parallel to the 1 heading North. Finally I decided to take some random road that headed pretty much due East, it was better than North, and take my chances.

It was on the 68, after a hot meal of Jack in the Box that I felt my rear tire go flat. It had already been shaky from being so warped, the flat tire was icing on the cake. What to do? Not many choices. I needed to fix the flat and keep trucking so I could find a bit more quiet place to spend the night. Luckily there was a blinking light mounted over a "Stop Ahead" sign nearby so I slugged my bike underneath it and went to work on the repairs. The repairs weren't going well. First of all it was on the back wheel so I needed to kick the wheel off the chain, and mess around with the broken spokes. Luckily I had another spare tube. Unluckily I punctured it when I put it on. At this point, if I was a smart man, I would have realized that I was in a more serious problem, but being hunky dory and happy go lucky (not so much happy at this point) someone pulled over and asked, "Do you need any help?" So a few moments later I had my bike in the warm confines of a physical therapist's garage and was munching away on bagels. Score. His wife had spotted me on the side of the road and he was an avid cycler in the area, later explaining to me the quagmire that is Highway 1 at the south end of Monterey. It turns out you have to go through Pebble Beach to get around that section. The sign that points this out? Never put up. "Budget conflicts. We complained about that quite a bit, but they never got around to it. At least we got the bike path built." Tis a bonus. Although I had scored the major coup in having another shower and soft place to sleep.

Come morning Mark (the P.T.) had some tennis scheduled so he and his friends took me into town while they played and I ate breakfast, after which we planned to all meet up at the bicycle shop when it opened. Amazingly, things went just as planned, and to shock me thoroughly Mark paid for everything. I tried to object a bit, but not too much because I'm a scrub, so he said, "When you have the opportunity just do the same for someone else." Word, Mark. After the speedy repairs, the bike was reassembled and he drove me to the spot where Highway 1 was once again bike friendly. Again, I was off. And this time with two new water bottles. (He heard all about Kiedis.)

Now, despite fantastic adventures, I had become short on time. It's around noon and with the break downs figured in I was about a hundred miles off pace. Speed can't really over come something like this when weight is such a factor, even with a smooth running machine, so I had to make up the difference with stamina. The choice was made. Today would be an all-nighter. As such I was able to tie together a 30 hour, 205 mile slog through the mid coast of California. Sights were a blur, much of the time was spent at night. I composed birthday letters in my head. I wanted to see visions. The Hearst castle floated on unseen hills. Large and ghost like with Cheshire cat eyes. Come late afternoon of day two, however, the Californian highways once again conspired against me. Highway 1 had road construction obliterating the shoulder between Lompoc and Gaviota Park. Gaviota would be the likely place for me to camp that night, unless I pressed on even farther. Still, from Lompoc directly, it wasn't an option so I had to follow a bit of a detour.

When faced with the choice of going Southeast and ending up in Gaviota Park or going due East and visiting bustling Buellton--which I might add claims to be the home of split pea soup--I'd rather go to Gaviota. I know! Even with the magnetic pull of split pea. The most interesting part of the detour that I discovered was that once I made it to Buellton I would be rerouted onto Highway 101. Now as far as the "no bikes on the highway" rule that a Santa Cruz police officer cited a day or two prior, this rule is pretty frequently tossed aside, but on the 101 from San Francisco it's pretty standard: No bikes. Yet here I am, in Buellton, at night, looking at signs that say, "This way yon bike." Or something similarly backwards. Once again, how diligent will semi-trucks be looking out for those thousands (one) of bikers that will be filed onto their evening route? As it turns out, a police officer was. Pulled over yet again we discussed options. He wasn't into giving stinky bikers rides in his cruiser, but did know some local ranchers who had a spot off the road for me to set up camp. He shined his spot light down an asphalt drive just off the highway and guided me into to bush enclosed space. "You won't be bothered here and if you are tell them I told you to stay." Sounds good to me. Going for the double nighter wasn't that high of a priority. Plus, developing infected saddle soars isn't really that high up on my to do list either.

Soon the tent was up and the bike was down. The sheriff was off to patrol his highway and I was resigned to getting some sleep. Still, a shower would be nice. Ah Kiedis, your misdeeds were erased by the kind actions of a good Samaritan. With me I had two brand new--and recently filled--water bottles. (You want to stock up at night so you can brush your teeth and be ready to ride in the morning.) But two?! That's just playing it safe. Since I'm already locked in to camping out south of Buellton I might as well get a shower out of the deal. With that I stripped under the moon light and did the water bottle shuffle. Nothing like a cold splash to end a meandering 200 mile exodus. I put on some fresh underpinnings and fell fast asleep. The next day it was L.A. and kicking it Joe Ying style, and so ended the Water Bottle Saga.

Coming Soon: Introspection. Honest!

I went and did the live journal thing and checked out Bea play El Gato Loco here in San Diego. Newlywed to throwingstardna, Bea put on a clean set and even showed a little comedic flair, "What do you call a Mexican with a rubber toe? Roberto," while playing to an intimate crowd. (Don't worry she prefaced the joke with a clear explanation how it's not racist, it merely requires the name Roberto as the punchline. She left out the Roberto part though. That would spoil the joke.) Me, being a dork, got there early, sat awkwardly for a while, grabbed a paper, read about Gore Vidal, didn't introduce myself (I'm not much of one for introductions), took some pictures, enjoyed the show, and then hurried off. Regardless, I wasn't dorky enough to miss the show completely. If she's in your area check her out.

(onlymebea.com) or (myspace.com/bea)
